Resting In His Presence

Scripture Focus:

Matthew 8:23–27

Psalms 91:1

There’s something deeply comforting—and honestly, a little challenging—about the image of Jesus resting in the middle of a storm.

In Matthew 8:23–27, Jesus tells His disciples to get into the boat and go to the other side. What’s striking is that He gives them a destination, but not the details of the journey. He doesn’t warn them about the storm. He doesn’t explain the waves or the wind. He simply gives the instruction—and then He rests.

That part matters.

Because if we’re honest, we often want the full itinerary. We want to know what’s coming, how long it will last, and how it will all work out. But Jesus models something different. He shows us what it looks like to trust God so deeply that even in the middle of uncertainty, you can rest.

When Life Feels Like a Storm

Have you ever felt like life was closing in on you?

Like the waves of responsibility, pressure, and emotion were rising higher and higher?Like the winds of uncertainty were shaking everything you thought was stable?

Like the very boat you’re in—the place that’s supposed to carry you—is starting to feel unsafe?

Maybe your mind won’t slow down. Maybe anxiety keeps replaying worst-case scenarios. Maybe you’re carrying silent burdens no one else can see.

And the question becomes painfully real:

How am I supposed to rest in the middle of this?

R — Release the Need for Control

One of the hardest truths to accept is that we are not in control of the storm.

The disciples couldn’t stop the wind. They couldn’t calm the sea. And neither can we control every circumstance in our lives. Trying to do so only exhausts us.

Rest begins when we release the illusion of control and acknowledge that God is sovereign—even over the storm.

E — Embrace His Presence

Psalms 91:1 says, "Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.”

Notice that rest is not found in the absence of trouble—it’s found in His presence.

To dwell means to stay, to remain, to abide. It’s not a quick visit; it’s a posture. When we choose to sit with God, to pray, to be still, and to lean into Him, we begin to experience a kind of rest that circumstances can’t take away.

S — Surrender Your Worries

The disciples panicked while Jesus slept.

Isn’t that just like us?

We strive, worry, and overthink—while the One who holds all power is at peace. Surrender means handing over what is overwhelming you and trusting that God is fully capable of handling it.

You don’t have to carry what God is asking you to release.

T — Trust His Word

Jesus said, “Let’s go to the other side.”

That alone was the promise.

The storm didn’t cancel the destination—it was just a part of the journey.

The same is true for you. Whatever God has spoken over your life still stands. The winds may rise, and the waves may crash, but His word remains steady.

If Jesus can rest in the storm, it’s because He knows the outcome.

And if He’s in your boat, you can trust the outcome too.

Final Thought

Rest is not about everything around you being calm—it’s about knowing Who is with you in the chaos.

You may not be able to quiet every thought immediately. You may not be able to change your situation overnight.

But you can choose to dwell.

And in His presence, you will find rest.

Prayer

Father God,

In the midst of everything that feels overwhelming, teach me how to rest in You. Help me to release control, embrace Your presence, surrender my worries, and trust Your word. Quiet my mind and remind me that if You are with me, I have nothing to fear. Let Your peace cover me, even in the middle of life’s storms.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

R.E.S.T. Reflection

This week, ask yourself:

Am I trying to calm the storm, or am I choosing to rest in the One who controls it?
